Beginning with the Fall 2010 season, MYSA will be providing additional playing opportunities by implementing our new Youth Development teams in addition to our Competitive and Player Development League teams.  Below is a basic summary of each:

 Competitive League Teams

Competitive teams are created based on tryouts, which are held each May.  Previous player evaluations from previous MYSA coaches may also play a role.  Players who make a competitive team will begin practicing by the beginning of June in preparation for Qualifying Tournament, which is held during the summer.  The results of the Qualifying tournament are used to place teams in brackets (Gold, Silver, Bronze, Division I, Division II and Classic).  Gold and Silver teams are the highest level of play, while the Classic teams are comparable to the Recreational Plus level of play.

OYSA fees for Competitive teams are much higher than PDL or YDL team fees, thus costing the players more. Competitive players are required to have the highest level of commitment, and be prepared for the costs involved with more travel for away games.

Competitive Teams VS. Player Development Teams (PDL)

The cost for each player is less for our PDL teams because the leagues are less expensive and traveling around the state is not necessary, but PDL teams may be required to travel as far as St. Helens for away games.

One of the most obvious benefits of offering PDL is we enable players who were not selected for a competitive team this season the opportunity to continuing playing and refining his/her skills. Likewise, those not interested in the more serious levels, but love the game have a place to play after U10.

Youth Development Teams (YDL)

Youth Development teams are similar to the PDL teams.  The primary difference, is the age the YDL Leagues serve.  YDL is for players at the U9 and U10 age.  This is a new program to MYSA in the Fall of 2010.  This is a new and exciting opportunity for the younger soccer players in McMinnville who are looking for more competition and commitment than the Parks and Recreation program provides.
